Cosmetic dentistry is a type of oral care concerned with enhancing the appearance of the mouth, teeth and smile. While many cosmetic dentistry procedures are elective, some types also lead to additional restorative benefits.
Here are a few popular cosmetic dentistry procedures to give you an idea of what is involved and what to expect if you should undergo one.
A dental veneer is a type of cosmetic enhancement involving the placement of a very thin material onto the surface of a tooth to correct a minor defect or to provide teeth whitening. There are two basic types of veneers: composite and porcelain. Porcelain is preferred due to its superior stain resistance and durability.
A small amount of your tooth enamel may need to be removed prior to the placement of your veneers. We use a special dental cement to affix your new veneers onto your teeth. Continue to care for them just as you do for your other teeth so that they last as long as possible.
Dental implants are exploding in popularity right now for a good reason: They provide the best solution to replace one or more missing teeth. One reason is that they appear just like your original tooth. Not only do they have the same look, they function just like a natural tooth.
Another appeal of dental implants is that they are long-lasting. Although they are somewhat expensive compared to alternative tooth replacement options, you get real value for your money. You can expect your new dental implant to last for the rest of your life.
Dental implant procedures are performed in a couple of dental visits. First, we examine you and place a screw made of titanium into your jaw. Over the next few months, your jaw will be busy fusing to your new implant. Once this process is complete, we attach an abutment to the post, which is later fitted with a dental crown to provide both a chewing surface and the look of a natural tooth.
Tooth bleaching, or whitening, is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures. Many patients are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth due to stains caused by certain beverages or smoking. Although some receive some benefit from over-the-counter products, nothing can beat a professional teeth whitening treatment.
Your teeth whitening options at home include the use of whitening strips or whitening trays. Some people also purchase an expensive whitening toothpaste, but it offers little to no results in most cases.
The whitening strips are placed on the teeth and remain in contact with them for a specified amount of time. A more effective at-home solution is whitening trays. These can be formed to custom fit the mouth and filled with a whitening gel. The limitation of this type of treatment is that of the hydrogen peroxide that is used. It is of a much lower concentration that is available at your dentist office.
We can brighten your teeth by several shades very quickly in our office. Patients respond best when they undergo regular teeth whitening treatments to remove any subsequent staining on their teeth.
Composite bonding is a cosmetic dentistry method involving the use of a special dental material called composite resin. We shape and mold this material right onto your teeth, providing the aesthetic of a whiter, straighter smile.
Many patients choose to have cosmetic bonding procedures performed to correct teeth that are chipped, stained or gapped. A composite resin bonding procedure is quite simple and can be finished in only one appointment.
The procedure itself begins when we remove some of the enamel from the surface of the treated tooth, which allows us to properly shape the resin onto your tooth. We then follow up using a bonding agent.
