When you need your teeth whitened, is it worth it to visit your dentist? Are there any differences between home teeth whitening and dentist whitening treatments? Let’s break it down by procedure…
Our dental professionals provide teeth whitening treatments for our patients in-office. This leads to safe and reliable whitening results. We can offer you superior results to at-home teeth whitening, largely due to our access to stronger bleaching gels. In fact, we can brighten your teeth up to 10 shades brighter in less than an hour. We can even offer custom-made whitening kits for you to take home with you from the Opalescence system.
Zoom teeth whitening is optimal for anyone wishing to enjoy dramatic results after only one session. This procedure is quite comfortable, and most patients find it to be very relaxing. You can kick back and relax as we do all of the work for you.
The start of the process involves applying a special hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth. Your gums will be fully protected at this time so that they are not harmed.
The Zoom system is quite good at removing surface stains that sometimes last even after a professional cleaning. Since our gel works its way into the enamel of your teeth, it can offer dramatic lightning results, sometimes even helping with deeper stains caused by certain beverages like coffee and tea.
Some patients utilize teeth whitening kits at home as an alternative to professional treatment. However, whitening kits are rarely able to achieve the same results as professional treatments, due largely to the fact that they contain lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. So they cannot whiten your teeth to the same degree of shade changes available with professional treatment. If you need a good bit of teeth whitening, you are probably going to be disappointed with the results of an at-home kit.
Many people use teeth whitening strips that you must apply a couple of times daily for an hour or two, depending upon the product. These products can make your teeth a couple of shades whiter. One problem that is commonly reported is that the strips offer uneven results since they cannot reach into teeth crevices.
Our at-home solutions include whitening trays that are placed into boiling water to soften the material, allowing it to be molded around the teeth. This does result in a custom tray that can be filled with whitening gel. The results are improved after an in-office bleaching treatment.
Now that you have invested in your smile by whitening your teeth, you will want to ensure that your stunning results last for as long as possible. The first two days after your treatment is very important. Be mindful of any food or drink that you consume, as certain types of food and beverages can stain your teeth. Some common food items that often lead to staining are:
Tea and coffee
Dark sauces. Avoid soy sauce, barbecue sauce and red pasta sauce
Fruit juice
Acidic foods, like lemons and oranges, as these foods can we can weaken your enamel
Dark chocolate, which contains stain-causing caffeine
If you can't help drinking coffee, tea, or sodas, you can drink them using a straw instead of drinking directly from a glass. Drinking through a straw ensures that the liquid will not contact your teeth.
Going forward, you might consider using a whitening toothpaste a few times a week. Although it is no substitute for a professional teeth whitening treatment, it can serve as a sort of touch-up to remove any stains that may have developed after your treatment.
If you are debating whether you should choose teeth whitening at home or professional treatment, consider the results that you are trying to achieve. At-home whitening treatments typically make teeth a few shades whiter when used frequently. This is not a dramatic difference. If you prefer a system that does not need to be used frequently and produces consistent results, a professional teeth whitening treatment will be the best choice for you.
