What is a dental cleaning?

Undergoing a professional dental cleaning is a great way to both prevent and treat gum disease, medically known as periodontal disease. Some patients are anxious about visiting for a cleaning. Although this is not surprising, it is completely unnecessary when you really understand what is involved.

A dental cleaning usually takes around 30 minutes - 1 hour to complete while you are seated in a dental chair. Our dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth to prevent the development of tooth decay. These materials can build up on your teeth, and tartar can only be removed by your professional dental team.

During your dental cleaning, we will also be looking for evidence of gum disease that can compromise the integrity of your teeth. We will also check your bite. If it is not correctly functioning, you may be referred to an orthodontist for appropriate treatment.

What is a dental filling?

It is not pleasant to think about, but everyone's teeth are always teeming with bacteria. Much of it is completely harmless. But some bacteria winds up damaging the outer layer of the teeth, known as enamel. This leads to the formation of a hole called a cavity. Once this occurs, we must place a dental filling to keep the situation from worsening and save the tooth.

A dental filling begins with the administration of a local anesthetic delivered via injection. Next, your dentist will drill into the tooth and remove all decay and debris that is found. Finally, the tooth will be filled with a material that prevents further damage to the tooth.

What is a root canal?

Also known as endodontic treatment, a root canal is a procedure in general dentistry involving the removal of infected or inflamed tissues from within a tooth. Underneath the hard outer surfaces of your teeth, a soft tissue called the dental pulp is found. This tissue houses nerve fibers, blood vessels and other soft tissue. It is vital for the maintenance of a tooth, although a mature tooth can survive without it by obtaining nourishment from nearby tissues.

When we perform a root canal, we are removing the dental pulp that has become infected. We completely clean out the root canal and dental pulp chamber, refilling it to safeguard against further damage.

A root canal makes a good treatment choice for patients with significant pulp infection or inflammation. Left untreated, a serious infection may develop that leads to severe pain or the presence of a dental abscess that can eventually compromise the integrity of the tooth.
