At Aesthetic Dental Center of Hackensack, our mission is to preserve the health and appearance of your teeth and smile. If you have one or more missing teeth, you have likely begun seeking out treatment options. We put together this guide to assist you in making a decision in an informed way.
A dental implant is a metal screw placed into the jaw to serve as an anchor for a tooth replacement. The whole process consists of three parts: a titanium screw itself, an abutment (essentially a connector between the dental implant and a crown), and a crown itself. The dental implant is placed into the jawbone during a surgical phase of the treatment. At Aesthetic Dental Center of Hackensack this phase is performed by our oral surgeon specialist Dr. Wong-Sang Lee. After dental implant placement the outside biocompatible surface of the implant is fused to the jawbone in the process called osseointegration, which lasts several months. The abutment is fit onto the titanium screw, followed by placement of a crown over the abutment during a restorative phase. This is being done by your treating general dentist. The crown over a dental implant usually feels and looks just like a normal tooth.
What are the advantages of a dental implant?
Dental implants are a superior treatment choice for replacing missing teeth due to a variety of reasons:
The roots of your natural teeth are embedded in your jawbone, offering a firm foundation so that your teeth can properly function. When a tooth has been lost or extracted, bone around it starts deteriorate, or resorb. The bone is melting away.
Dental implants help to preserve bone by serving as substitute tooth roots. They actually offer the similar function as your original tooth roots, which stimulates bone and preserves it so that it does not resorb as would occur normally with tooth loss. Your jawbone will grow around and bond with your new implant, providing a stable foundation that appears, feels and functions just like your natural tooth.
If you have numerous missing teeth, the jaws start rapidly deteriorating. Even worse, as bone resorbs, muscles begin retreating from their original positions and start caving in without support, and wrinkles dramatically increase as the face collapses in on itself.
Because your new implants will be serving as replacement for tooth roots, adjacent teeth need not become involved as with other treatment options. Since treatment options like dental bridges require that adjacent teeth are altered to make room for the bridge, this may not be an ideal option in certain cases. For instance, if you have healthy teeth neighboring an extraction site or space for missing teeth, implants are a great treatment alternative.
Oral hygiene is not compromised since flossing and caring for the dental implant is similar to the natural tooth.
Now that you have received your new dental implant, you will want to care for it properly so that it lasts for decades to come. This means that you need to keep up with your regular oral regimen of daily brushing and flossing. Although the dental implant itself is quite resilient, your gums and underlying bone can still be harmed when you are not keeping up with your oral hygiene.
